As we ramp up for the first session of Stagedoor Manor Studios, we wanted to let you all in on some exciting updated and insights from our teachers! First up is Kimberly Grigsby, who has a long list of impressive credits including musical director for Amélie, Spring Awakening, and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark!
To help you get to know Kimberly, we asked her a few questions:
When did you first get involved with theatre/dance?
“I first caught the theatre bug in high school, when I was asked to play the piano and teach the music for The Diary of Adam and Eve, from Bock and Harnick’s The Apple Tree.
Even though I went to college for Piano Performance, circumstances and opportunities kept leading back to the theatre. I found that I preferred the collaborative environment over the solitude of a practice room.”
Who or what was your biggest influence throughout your career in theatre?
“I have been very fortunate to have several mentors along my career path, including teachers and colleagues from each step of my journey.”
What’s the most enjoyable aspect of teaching/directing/acting?
“The most enjoyable aspect of music directing is conducting a show; the result of much effort by many people, working together to find the best way to tell that particular story.”
Who inspires you the most?
“My answer is more about “what” inspires me most, as to “who”. I am constantly inspired by people in this business, in all areas – actors, directors, choreographers, designers, musicians, and producers. The common qualities that these individuals possess, which inspire me the most are: curiosity about the world; passion about the work; humility, (despite their extraordinary talents); honesty; and a generosity of spirit towards others.”
What’s the most important piece of advice you can offer to performers?
“Be truthful and present in your storytelling.”
If you weren’t doing theatre, what would be your alternate career choice?
“Teacher or guidance counselor for middle school age students.”
